Polo & match help
New to polo? Start here
- Chukker
- A period of play. The scoreboard shows the current chukker and time remaining.
- Teams & numbers
- Outdoor polo has four players per team, wearing numbers 1–4.
- Goal
- The ball passes between the goal posts to score one goal.
- Foul & penalty
- A foul breaks a rule. A penalty is the officials’ award for an infringement.
- Handicap
- A player’s ability rating, expressed in goals. It is separate from goals scored in this match.
- Line of the ball & right of way
- The ball’s path helps determine which players have priority to approach it safely.
Who does what on the field?

- Referee (third man)

Choose your commentary setup
- Phone only
- Speak into your device or a connected microphone. People open the match link and tap Listen.
- Commentary off
- Follow scores and match updates. The app microphone, broadcast and recording are off.
- Device + PA
- Use the PA microphone. Keep a phone or laptop beside the mixer and connect it using the mixer’s USB audio connection or a compatible audio adapter. The PA and Polo Cast receive the same commentary. Keep app sound out of the PA.
- Set up before the event
- Device + PA requires a mixer connection that already works with your iPhone, Android phone or laptop. Test it beforehand. Do not rely on installing software at the field. If it is not ready, use Phone only or Commentary off.
- Avoid feedback
- Keep the microphone close to your mouth and PA speakers pointed away from it. Nearby listeners should use headphones or scores only. App audio is delayed relative to the PA; do not play it over field speakers. Software cannot eliminate every acoustic feedback loop.
Using Polo Cast
- Listener
- Open the match link for scores. Tap Listen for commentary. No account needed.
- Host
- Set up the match, add officials and sponsors, and share invitations.
- Scorer workspace
- Record the officials’ calls. Assign goals to players; team totals update automatically. Undo preserves the original entry and logs the correction.
- Scoring support (field official access)
- Enter fouls and penalties as called by the officials.
- Timekeeper workspace
- Start, pause and correct the clock on the officials’ instructions. Clock adjustments appear in the event log. Scorer & Timekeeper combines both workspaces.
- Commentator
- Check the microphone, then start the countdown. Going on air starts recording; going off air stops it. Download clips before leaving.
- Joining staff
- Sign in and use the host’s private invitation. A match code alone gives listeners no control of play.
Use headphones for the best experience. Avoid speakerphone near the commentator to prevent feedback.
